MIU MIU Women’s Tales Shine at the 2023 Venice Film Festival

On the occasion of the “Giornate degli Autori” at the Venice Film Festival, on September 3, 2023, Miu Miu premiered the latest commission in its Women’s Tales series, “Stane,” directed by Cannes Golden Camera winner and Croatian filmmaker Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, alongside its 25th commissioned work “Eye Two Times Mouth” by Mexican independent film director, screenwriter, and producer Lila Aviles.

Commissioned by Miu Miu since 2011, Women’s Tales is a series of unique short films that narrate stories of women through the distinct perspectives of some of the most revered female filmmakers worldwide. To date, the series has unveiled 26 independent works, covering mesmerizing and poignant realms of each creator. Full of political quandaries, generational displacement, and vibrant protagonists, Women’s Tales serve as an archive of feminist intuition and touching tales, marking the 21st century, juxtaposing vanity issues with the broader, more complex issues faced by women today. The directors of Women’s Tales explore the contradictions between appearance, power, pleasure, and sexiness in visually stunning cinematic masterpieces that pose intimate and thought-provoking questions across cultures and regions. Narrated by the graceful performances of renowned actresses and models, Miu Miu’s Women’s Tales embody the spirit and attitude of Miu Miu.

Penny Martin of “Gentlewoman” will host a two-day series of conversations on September 3 and 4 during the festival, gathering multiple directors, advocates, and consultants. The discussions aim to highlight the risks currently faced in the domain of women’s filmmaking, acknowledge challenges, and collectively brainstorm opportunities to change the game.

Miu Miu is also launching the new Miu Miu Women’s Tales Committee, comprised of a distinguished group of thought leaders in the film industry who will steer this influential short film series into its next era. Committee members include award-winning filmmaker and director of Women’s Tales’ fifth installment Ava DuVernay, renowned actress, writer, and director Maggie Gyllenhaal, two-time Oscar-winning costume, production, and set designer Catherine Martin, along with committee co-founders Miuccia Prada and Verde Visconti, who will shape the knowledge, cultural, and industry direction of Women’s Tales.
