Music This Week

Skream x Trim “Funky Sailor”

Skream, recognized as one of the UK’s most beloved music selectors, has maintained remarkable consistency throughout his career. He began creating music at the age of fifteen and played a pivotal role in the emergence of Dubstep, becoming a key innovator with his iconic self-titled debut album and legendary track “Midnight Request Line.” He has used his platform to share a diverse array of Techno tracks, exploring a wide range of textures from raw and gritty to soulful. His latest work, “Funky Sailor,” in collaboration with Trim, nostalgically revisits early UK Funky and Grime, featuring improvised repetitive segments that transport any early 2000s teenager back to the smoky garages of around 2008 (optionally with a bottle of Frosty Jack’s in hand, though not mandatory). The song is accompanied by an equally nostalgic and quintessentially British music video, making it an instant club hit designed for remixing.

Lord Apex and Freddie Gibbs “Phoenix”

Lord Apex’s latest track, “Phoenix,” marks a new chapter in the rapid ascent of this London talent. Produced by Argov, the track features a light and smooth rhythm that provides a soulful backdrop for Apex’s signature style. Notably, he shares the spotlight with one of America’s most sought-after rappers, Freddie Gibbs, adding a spirited edge to the song. Apex oversees every aspect of his artistic work, from selecting producers to meticulously crafting vocals and shaping artistic direction. Since his breakthrough projects “Bamboo Forest” and “Interplanetary Funk,” Apex has blazed a trail filled with charisma and energy. He has had the privilege of performing alongside some of the giants in American rap, including a tour with Freddie Gibbs and Action Bronson last year. As one of the most popular emerging rap talents, he has collaborated with brands like Supreme, Carhartt, and New Balance. He also made a cameo in one of this year’s most significant sneaker collaborations—the Nike Air Max 95 X Corteiz.

Sames “Phonesex”

On September 29, Berlin-based experimental electronic artist Sames released the highly anticipated EP “Phonesex.” The EP blends emotionally charged, dance-friendly electronic tracks with Sames’ unique and distorted vocals, creating an intimate atmosphere. It starts with “All I Know,” a hypnotic rhythm with intricate percussion and creative synth backgrounds, followed by “Why You Trippin’,” which crafts a smooth and mellow house vibe with stream-of-consciousness vocals and delicate tones. The title track, “Phonesex,” is an upbeat, reverb-filled instrumental featuring Sames’ sensual rhythmic vocals. The EP’s accompaniment is a neon-soaked atmospheric music video depicting chaotic night scenes. The EP concludes with “Control” and its “Afterhours Mix,” featuring cat-and-mouse lyrics and minimalist rhythms that leave a lasting impression. The lyrics are irresistibly catchy: “I’ll never let go / You always want control / I always want to take you home.” Sames redefines contemporary electronic music with his Berlin-style soundscapes and original vocals. He is a rising star in the electronic music scene, performing across Europe and supported by renowned artists. “Phonesex” introduces Sames’ enigmatic electronic soundscape, establishing him as an important new figure in music.

Lewis OfMan “Frisco Blues”

French pop prodigy Lewis OfMan returns with his latest single, “Frisco Blues,” the second track from his highly anticipated album, and announces his upcoming European tour. This latest track unexpectedly fuses acoustic guitar samples with children’s choir samples, discovered during a visit to a record store while traveling in New York. This spring, he shot a short documentary titled “Frisco Blues” during his tour in the U.S., laying the groundwork for the second chapter of Lewis OfMan’s career.

Mette “For The People”

Accompanying the album is her infectious new single, “For The People.” This seven-track work showcases Mette’s unfiltered vocal prowess, signature catchy melodies, introspective songwriting, and multifaceted artistic expression, exploring themes of gentleness, strength, honesty, nobility, and vulnerability. This EP solidifies her status as one of the most captivating artists of the moment, poised for a promising trajectory in 2024.
