IVAN ARGOTE Presents “DESCANSO” Installation Art at the 60th Venice Biennale

Colombian artist Ivan Argote presented his latest installation work “Descanso” at the 60th Venice Biennale Art Exhibition.

Rooted deeply in themes of resistance and migration, Argote’s artistic journey reflects his personal experience of relocating from Colombia to France. His works challenge the creation of monumental sculptures and installations in public spaces, which are layered with time and meaning.

Widely acclaimed, his work is collected by renowned institutions worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami.

“Descanso” serves as an anti-monument, prompting viewers to ponder a paradigm shift. It reimagines the Christopher Columbus statue on Madrid’s Plaza de Colón, toppled and engulfed by a mass of invasive native and exotic weeds and plants, symbolizing a vibrant, harmonious space being reclaimed.

This installation acts as a refuge from colonial heritage, calling for the abandonment of outdated heroism that glorifies violence against different peoples. It advocates for life and heralds a new era of harmony with others and nature.

Displayed in the Giardini of the Biennale, “Descanso” transforms the political symbolism of the statue into a vessel for natural vitality, showcasing a stark contrast between historical reckoning and ecological stewardship.

Argote’s video work “Paseo,” showcased in the Arsenale, complements the installation. This film explores a decolonized narrative, envisioning the Columbus statue traversing Madrid in exile. Through this deconstruction, Argote emphasizes his commitment to combating historical injustices and environmental crises.

With “Descanso,” Ivan Argote invites us to confront the past, reimagine the present, and chart a path towards a more inclusive and sustainable future.
