CRASH N°101 Art Edition: Women Only

The traits associated with femininity have often been devalued and scrutinized far more than their masculine counterparts. Armed with the power to confront numerous clichés head-on, feminist artists of the 1970s robustly challenged their identities as women. Art, after all, is not an isolated domain where individuals can abandon their uniqueness in pursuit of an illusory neutrality. If femininity often remains perceived as a societal constraint, then the challenge lies in reconnecting it with freedom.

Action and discovery of a genuine openness can enrich art and liberate exploration in fresh, novel ways. Far from being satisfied with opposing masculine identity claims, it has been proven that if femininity holds significance today, it inherently possesses the potential for plurality. It’s as if an identity supernova has exploded: now, only a few groups, diverse women, are experiencing the growing pains of emerging into new reference points and the possibilities of desires being constructed.
